  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk (if needed for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line with parchment paper.
  3. In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Ensure the batter is smooth and pourable; add more buttermilk if needed.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined.
  12. Mix in vanilla extract and adjust consistency with milk if needed.
  13. Level the tops of the cakes if domed.
  14. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread cream cheese frosting on top.
  15. Place the second layer on top and press gently.
  16. Frost the top and sides of the cake with remaining cream cheese frosting.
  17. Add sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fresh berries for decoration (optional).
  18. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes for a firmer frosting.
  19. Slice and enjoy your delicious Red Velvet Cake!
