Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package of phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
- 1 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup Nutella
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, and hazelnuts. You can use a food processor for a finer texture if you prefer.
- Add the ground cinnamon to the nut mixture and stir well to combine. Set the nut mixture aside.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Unroll the thawed phyllo dough and cover it with a damp kitchen towel to prevent it from drying out.
- Brush the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
- Carefully lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish, allowing the edges to hang over the sides. Brush the top with melted butter.
- Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet of phyllo dough, until you have about 8 sheets layered in the dish.
- Spread a thin layer of Nutella over the phyllo dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Sprinkle a generous layer of the nut mixture over the Nutella.
- Continue layering by adding 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with melted butter.
- Repeat the process of spreading Nutella and adding the nut mixture until all the nuts are used, finishing with a final layer of phyllo dough (aim for about 8 layers on top).
- Use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, cutting through all layers.
- Place the baklava in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining sugar, water, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- After baking, remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the top.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely in the pan.
- Once cooled, serve the baklava directly from the baking dish, cutting along the lines made earlier.
- For an extra touch, drizzle some melted Nutella over the top or sprinkle with chopped nuts.
Notes
- Ensure the phyllo dough remains covered with a damp towel while working to prevent it from drying out.
- You can customize the nut mixture based on your preferences or what you have on hand.
- For a more intense flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the nut mixture.
