Description

Experience a delightful twist on a classic dessert with this Nutella Baklava. Crispy layers of phyllo dough are filled with a rich blend of nuts and Nutella, all drenched in a sweet syrup. Perfect for any occasion, this indulgent treat is sure to satisfy your sweet cravings!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package of phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 cup hazelnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, and hazelnuts. You can use a food processor for a finer texture if you prefer.
  2. Add the ground cinnamon to the nut mixture and stir well to combine. Set the nut mixture aside.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Unroll the thawed phyllo dough and cover it with a damp kitchen towel to prevent it from drying out.
  5. Brush the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
  6. Carefully lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish, allowing the edges to hang over the sides. Brush the top with melted butter.
  7. Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet of phyllo dough, until you have about 8 sheets layered in the dish.
  8. Spread a thin layer of Nutella over the phyllo dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  9. Sprinkle a generous layer of the nut mixture over the Nutella.
  10. Continue layering by adding 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with melted butter.
  11. Repeat the process of spreading Nutella and adding the nut mixture until all the nuts are used, finishing with a final layer of phyllo dough (aim for about 8 layers on top).
  12. Use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, cutting through all layers.
  13. Place the baklava in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
  14. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining sugar, water, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  15. Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  16. After baking, remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the top.
  17. Allow the baklava to cool completely in the pan.
  18. Once cooled, serve the baklava directly from the baking dish, cutting along the lines made earlier.
  19. For an extra touch, drizzle some melted Nutella over the top or sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Notes

  • Ensure the phyllo dough remains covered with a damp towel while working to prevent it from drying out.
  • You can customize the nut mixture based on your preferences or what you have on hand.
  • For a more intense flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the nut mixture.
