Description
Creamy and energizing Keto Matcha Latte, perfect for a low-carb treat. Made with almond milk, matcha powder, and MCT oil for a delicious and healthy beverage.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or coconut milk for a richer flavor)
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder (high quality culinary grade recommended)
- 1 tablespoon MCT oil (or coconut oil)
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Sweetener to taste (erythritol, stevia, monk fruit, or your preferred keto-friendly sweetener)
- Pinch of sea salt
- Optional toppings: unsweetened whipped cream, a sprinkle of matcha powder
Instructions
- Sift the Matcha: Sift matcha powder into a small bowl using a fine-mesh sieve.
- Create a Matcha Paste (Optional): Add 1-2 tablespoons of warm water to the sifted matcha. Whisk vigorously with a matcha whisk or small regular whisk until a smooth, dark green paste forms.
- Heat the Milk: Pour almond milk (or coconut milk) into a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until steaming but not boiling. Alternatively, microwave in 30-second bursts.
- Froth the Milk:
- Electric Milk Frother: Pour warm milk into the frother and use the hot froth setting.
- Handheld Milk Frother: Immerse the frother into the warm milk and turn it on. Move it up and down to create a vortex and incorporate air. Froth for about 30-60 seconds, or until the milk is foamy and doubled in volume.
- French Press: Pour warm milk into a French press (no more than halfway). Secure the lid and pump the plunger vigorously for 30-60 seconds, until foamy.
- Whisking (Manual): Pour warm milk into a bowl and whisk vigorously until foamy.
- Combine Ingredients: Pour frothed milk into a blender (regular or immersion). Add matcha paste (or sifted matcha powder), MCT oil (or coconut oil), heavy cream (if using), vanilla extract, sweetener, and salt.
- Blend: Blend on high speed for 30-60 seconds, until smooth and creamy. Start on low speed and gradually increase to prevent splattering. Vent the lid slightly if using a regular blender.
- Pouring: Pour the latte into your favorite mug.
- Toppings (Optional): Top with unsweetened whipped cream and a sprinkle of matcha powder.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Adjust sweetness to taste.
- For an iced latte, blend all ingredients with ice.
- Add a pinch of cinnamon, ginger, or cardamom for a warm and spicy twist.
- Add a scoop of your favorite keto-friendly protein powder for a more filling and nutritious latte.
- Experiment with macadamia milk, cashew milk, or flax milk for different flavor profiles.
- Use a Bamboo Whisk (Chasen): If you’re serious about your matcha, invest in a bamboo whisk (chasen). It’s the traditional tool for preparing matcha and will help you achieve a smoother, more consistent paste.
- Quality Matters: The quality of your matcha powder will significantly impact the flavor of your latte. Look for high-quality culinary grade matcha that is vibrant green in color and has a slightly sweet, grassy aroma.
- Clumpy Matcha: If your matcha is clumping, make sure you’re sifting it before adding it to the milk. Creating a matcha paste first also helps to prevent clumping.
- Bitter Taste: If your latte is too bitter, try using a higher quality matcha powder or adding a bit more sweetener.
- Not Creamy Enough: If you want a creamier latte, use coconut milk instead of almond milk or add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream.
- Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
