Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Food coloring (optional, for decoration)
  • Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg. Whisk until well blended.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently fold together until just combined; a few lumps are okay.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough and knead gently until smooth.
  6. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Sprinkle more flour if sticky.
  7. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
  8. Place cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each.
  9. Gather leftover dough, re-roll, and cut out more donuts.
  10. Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Carefully drop a few donuts into the hot oil, frying for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  12. Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  13. Repeat with remaining donuts, maintaining oil temperature.
  14. In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  15. If desired, divide glaze into bowls and add food coloring for different colors.
  16. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off.
  17. Add sprinkles or additional decorations as desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature is consistent for even frying.
  • Customize your glaze with different colors and toppings for a festive look.
  • Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
