Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1/4 cup milk (for glaze)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
- Food coloring (optional, for decoration)
- Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg. Whisk until well blended.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently fold together until just combined; a few lumps are okay.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rest for 15-20 minutes.
- On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough and knead gently until smooth.
- Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Sprinkle more flour if sticky.
- Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
- Place cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each.
- Gather leftover dough, re-roll, and cut out more donuts.
- Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Carefully drop a few donuts into the hot oil, frying for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove donuts with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Repeat with remaining donuts, maintaining oil temperature.
- In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
- If desired, divide glaze into bowls and add food coloring for different colors.
- Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off.
- Add sprinkles or additional decorations as desired.
Notes
- Ensure the oil temperature is consistent for even frying.
- Customize your glaze with different colors and toppings for a festive look.
- Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
