Enjoy these baked churros, a healthier version of the classic dessert! Crispy outside and soft inside, they’re coated in a sweet cinnamon-sugar mix and perfect for dipping in chocolate sauce or pairing with whipped cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
- Chocolate sauce (for dipping)
- Optional: whipped cream or caramel sauce (for serving)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Place over medium heat and bring to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally.
- Once boiling, remove from heat and add flour. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a ball forms and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 1-2 minutes).
- Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Transfer churro dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or use a zip-top bag with a cut corner).
- Pipe the churro dough onto the prepared baking sheet in long strips, about 4-6 inches in length, leaving space between each.
- Use scissors to cut the dough at the end of each strip for a clean finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-baking.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet.
- In a shallow bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Mix well.
- Roll each churro in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Arrange the churros on a serving platter. Serve warm or at room temperature with chocolate sauce for dipping and optional whipped cream or caramel sauce.
Notes
- Ensure the dough cools sufficiently before adding the eggs to prevent cooking them.
- For a fun twist, try adding different spices to the sugar coating, such as nutmeg or cardamom.
